Pegnitz – worth visiting any time of the year
Pegnitz, a
town of about 15 000 inhabitants is a splendid place for shopping as well as
for leasure activities. It is situated amidst unspoiled nature of both
lovely and austere beauty. There is hardly any other region where you can
find such extreme contrasts within reach: impressive rock towers, meandering
valleys, blossoming orchards and mysterious caves.
Let us take
you for a walk around our attractive town centre: visit our medieval town
hall, the “Zaußenmühle” (an old mill) next to “Pegnitzquelle” ( source of
the river Pegnitz), “Schlossberg” (a hill with a lookout tower),
“Bartholomäus- und Marienkirche” (St. Bartholomew´s church and St. Mary´s
church), Wasserberg ( a hill where a stream disappears only to reappear
again after a few hundred metres) and many more sights.
Would you like
to get sportive and active in your holidays? Pegnitz offers you various
leasure opportunities: swimming in our heatable outdoor swimming pool,
tennis, fishing, horseback riding, cycling and mountain bike tours as well
as hiking on well maintained and colour-coded paths. Why not take a walk
along our instructive and well designed “Wald- und Imkerlehrpfad” ( a nature
trail teaching you about the forest and about beekeeping). Or come in the
winter and try our various cross-country ski runs, our ice-skating rink and
then relax in our indoor swimming pool and sauna.
As the gateway
to Swiss Franconia, Pegnitz is part of this unique nature park. This rough
and yet romantic landscape with its rock formations, river valleys and
dripstone caves is not only home to extraordinary flora and fauna, including
many protected plants, but it is also the ideal place for hikers, climbers,
cyclists, canoeists, for amateurs and sportsmen, for families with children,
senior citizens and stressed townies wanting to “get away from it all and
just relax”.
Enjoy your
stay in our lovable town. Our excellent restaurants will spoil you with
their tasty Franconian cuisine, with traditional snacks and beer
specialities brewed by our local breweries.
Why not stay
overnight? We are sure that with the help of our
"Unterkunftsverzeichnis"
(accommodation directory) you will find the right place to stay . Our
Tourist Office will be more than pleased to help you find the ideal
accommodation for you.
By the way:
Did you know that Upper Franconia with its close to 200 breweries is the
region with the highest density in breweries in the whole world? (source:
Chamber of Commerce and Trade for Upper Franconia, Bayreuth). A good time to
visit and taste our beer are the
“Flinderer weeks” – also known as Pegnitz´ 5th
season! During these weeks a special “Flinderer” beer is brewed by our local
breweries. Participating restaurants also serve special “Flinderer” dishes.
For more information on “Flinderer” and participating restaurants go to:

We wish you a
pleasant stay and a restful time in Pegnitz!
